Haltemprice & Howden news

ONE candidate unlikely to put in an appearance at next week’s count is 60s crooner Ronnie Carroll.

Now 73, the singer, who twice represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in the early 1960s, is standing under the Make Politicians History banner.

However, recent heart problems and a hospital visit have forced Ronnie to rethink his campaign.

According to his agent “Rainbow” George Reece, it means staying in London rather than knocking on doors in Haltemprice and Howden.

“Ronnie’s not very well at the moment,” said Mr Reece.
“He has a long-standing heart problem and suffers from water on the lungs.

“We don’t think he will be well enough to get up for the rest of the campaign or the count, although he will be there in spirit.”

Mr Reece said Ronnie was still hoping to attract floating voters in the by-election – and non-voters.

He said: “We work on the basis that every person who doesn’t vote is actually casting a vote for us.

“If there’s a low turnout, we will be claiming a moral victory.”

Meanwhile, the Miss Great Britain Party is contemplating possible legal action after a local bus company decided against running adverts featuring candidate Gemma Garrett on its vehicles.

The Miss GB Party said it was prepared to spend £5,000 on the adverts, only to be told at the last minute that the company was unable to accept any political advertising.
